KB 974571 – Do NOT apply on your OCS / LCS servers

For those of you who administrate an OCS or LCS environment, please read the following. It seems an issue has come up with a patch that came available during the last patch releases, regarding KB 974571. As described by Doug Deitterick’s blog, it’s recommended to NOT apply this patch. If you install the patch it’s possible your OCS / LCS servers believe they are in an evaluation mode.

You’ll see events like this one :

Event Type:        Error
Event Source:    Live Communications Server
Event Category:                (1000)
Event ID:              12290
Date:                     10/13/2009
Time:                     8:28:57 PM
User:                     N/A
Computer:
Description:
The evaluation period for Microsoft Office Live Communication Server 2005 has expired. Obtain the released version of this product and upgrade to the non-evaluation version by running setup.exe

A solution now is to uninstall the patch.

Communicator troubleshooting

I had a weird issue which occured at the communicator client (R2). The OCS (Office Communication Server) is version 2007 R2.

When I logged in (internal), the client had an exclamation mark. The following 2 errors occured :

Cannot synchronize with the corporate address book. This may be because the proxy server setting in your web browser does not allow access to the address book. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator.

Communicator could not retrieve calendar or Out of Office information from Exchange Web Services. Communicator will automatically  continue to retry. If this problem persists, contact your  system administrator.

When I started troubleshooting the issue I also noticed that Continue reading »
