Save yourself the trouble of disconnecting and reconnecting – How about using the following command?

Set-User -identity joe@domain.com -LinkedMasterAccount $null

Option 1 worked Great! I also want to thankmr_blank for the idea of the clean-mailboxdatabase command. I was puckering pretty hard core before I saw the note.

Option 1 Worked almost perfectly – I just needed to run clean-mailboxdatabase after disconnecting before exchange was able to see the disconnected mailbox and reconnect.

Option #1, good to go. I used the -whatif on both commands beforehand, to make sure I had the correct information.

The Linked Mailbox became a User Mailbox, but the E-Mail Address Policies are not working any more on the changed user. The only policy working is the Deafault with the lowest priority which is not right…
